Rev. Leland’s Weekly Message for Dec. 6th

Dearly beloved,

I have a friend, Kay, whom I met my first year in Hawaii, which was also my first year of ministry. We became good friends. Kay taught art for many years at Sonoma State in northern California. Before that she had many adventures, including riding with black men in the former Confederacy in the 1950s. Sure enough, they were stopped by the cops in Oklahoma, I think, and Kay says she and her passengers could have been in a lot of trouble, were it not for the fact that her father was president of a bank up north. Kay knows this is a good example of white privilege, but she and her friends sure were glad to have it.

Kay, who is about 85, sent me the following statement, framed:

JESUS was a radical nonviolent revolutionary who hung around with lepers hookers and crooks; wasn’t American and never spoke English; was anti-wealth anti-death penalty anti-public prayer (Matthew 6:5); but was never anti-gay, never mentioned birth control, never called the poor lazy, never justified torture, never fought for tax cuts for the wealthiest Nazarenes, never asked a leper for a co-pay; and was a long-haired brown-skinned homeless community-organizing anti-slut-shaming Middle Eastern Jew.                                                                                    ©John Fugelsang

In more prosaic news, our talented leaders, staff, my wife and I have been hard at work preparing us to grow. Our newsletter and website are now integrated. Mike Moutrie has led work flow advances to the exec team, I am carrying them forward for our Growth Group, and this organization may extend to other parts of our church life.

This coming week you will receive an email alerting you to your new  UUCE.org  member account. This will enable you to login to the website to see not only our growing content for the public, but also members-only resources like the church member directory, guides for using and participating with our website and other communications (photo-sharing, Facebook public and private, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram), newsletter, board minutes, forms, covenants, team charters, governing documents, rules, policies, history, photos galore, and more.

When you receive your email, just click on the link, login and use and enjoy however much or little you wish.
We stand ready to give you all the help you need, so when the time comes, don’t hesitate to ask.

The point of all this is to keep us all alert to strengths and opportunities. Please use any of these tools— or your phone to chat, or feet to visit— to share your ideas, connections, and needs, as we work to spread our mission.
