Unitarian Universalist Church of Elgin - September, 2000

UUCE Youth Do Boston

After two years of preparation, a group of eight youth and four adults made a pilgrimage to Boston. The youth included Amy Schmidlin, Kelly Wall, Laura Masonick, Kyle Underwood, Samantha Merritt, Jamie Kiesewetter, Marjorie Askins, and Laurie Waller. The chaperones and tour guides were Kathy Underwood, Kim Cecil, Mary Shelden and Dan Brosier.

In the five days they were in the Boston area they toured the Unitarian Universalist Association's headquarter and met with the Association's President, John Buehrens; toured King's Chapel, the oldest Unitarian church in the nation (they even saw the crypt), sailed on a whale watch excursion where we saw plenty of whales and dolphins (and got seasick); shopped at Quincy Market; went to church at the historic Arlington Street Church; toured Salem, shopped at Quincy Market; traveled to Concord to visit Walden Pond and visited with the Emersons, the Thoreaus, the Alcotts, and the Hawthornes (at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery); and of course shopped at Quincy Market.

All in all it was a great trip and soon we will begin planning for Boston Trip 2002.

Meet Our Intern Minister

The rumors are true. The Elgin UU Congregation is going to have an intern minister this year.

Hi,

My name is Jacquie Meli and I am the intern minister. I just completed my seminary education at Chicago Theological Seminary and your minister and Board of Trustees were gracious enough to agree to my plea to do an internship with you. I actually live in Rockford and Elgin is a comfortable commute as well as the size congregation in which I am interested. Many life experiences have led me to a call of ministry, and so I come to you seasoned with age and hopefully some wisdom. My husband Phil and two sons, Matt, age 11 and Nick, age 14 have taught me much about life, and my career as a school psychologist has added to my quilt of experiences. I will be with you beginning September 10, and begin gradually as I ease out of my part-time job in the Rockford school system, beginning a full time internship with you in January.

I have visited your congregation once already and was impressed with your bell choir, your sanctuary, your labyrinth and your friendliness. I look forward to getting to know you better and learning more about ministry from your congregation.

[Note: Jacquie will begin a full time internship in January and continue through May.]
